Surgical Dentistry

Surgical Dentistry focuses on a variety of techniques and procedures when maintenance of an issue is no longer an option. Our goal is to keep you as healthy as possible and perform surgery only when necessary to preserve your overall oral health. Our surgical procedures are offered in-office and can be performed using only local anesthesia - allowing you to return to regular activities, with caution, as you heal. Our dentists will answer your questions and do our best to alleviate any uncertainty you have as you prepare for your surgical procedure.

  • A dental implant is typically the best way to replace a missing tooth. Dental implants are an investment in your oral health and can help restore normal chewing and freshen up your smile.

  • If you think you may need a tooth removed, or if Dr. Josh or Dr. Diana determine your best treatment includes the removal of a tooth, you’re in great hands here at Doyle Family Dentistry. We understand that this can be a big decision and may potentially come with doubts, anxiety or fear.

We take every step to ensure that this treatment will be as painless as possible.

We also understand that going forward without a tooth can be a daunting thought! There are multiple ways to replace a missing tooth. We make every effort to discuss all the options to help you choose what best fits you!

What to expect with an extraction: Prior to the extraction, the doctor will numb the area to best maximize your comfort. You may feel pressure during the extraction – this is very normal and likely won’t be painful as the nerve has been properly numbed.

If you happen to feel any pain, please rest assured that we will stop and ensure we take the next proper steps to help increase your comfort level.

    Post Op Instructions:

Although we often get feedback from patient’s stating they were surprised how comfortable they were even after the numbing wore off, you may experience some discomfort after your extraction.

Immediately after the extraction you will be instructed to maintain biting pressure on the provided gauze for 30-45 minutes. If bleeding persists, replace the gauze with the extra that was provided to you. Like any other wound, you may have to do this multiple times to stop the bleeding.

During the first 24-48 hours a cold compress can be utilized to help with any discomfort. Simply place a cold pack on the sore area for 20 min on then 20 min off. After 48 hrs you can use a warm compress to help with potential soreness.

It is very important to maintain oral hygiene during your healing. Avoiding hard and sharp foods (peanuts, chips, seeds) and instead, eating soft, cold and nutrient dense foods are a great way to help enhance the healing.

Salt water rinses can be utilized starting the day after your extraction. Simply dissolve salt in warm water and gently tip your head side to side for 30-60 seconds. Let the water fall out of your mouth into the sink while avoiding forceful spitting.

    What about dry socket?

Dry socket is a lack of healing at the extraction site. It typically presents as a throbbing pain 3-7 days after your extraction. It can also be occupied by a bad taste or foul odor. If you are a smoker, avoid smoking for a minimum of one week after your extraction.

If you think you may be experiencing a ‘dry socket’ please call immediately so we can help ease your discomforts.

If you are in need of a dental extraction, or multiple extractions, please call us at 563-355-7884.

  • We realize that no one likely ever wants to hear they need a root canal! Modern root canals are not what they used to be and can be a great way to save a tooth in need. Root canals are utilized to remove infections and help eliminate oral pain.

    Root canals bring relief by:

    • Cleansing an infected tooth

    • Removing an abscess in your surrounding bone

    • Sealing the tooth from decay or infection

    • Keeping your oral and overall health at it’s best
